Hailing from Fords, N.J., The Knight Owls are Matt Check (guitar and vocals), John Check (guitar and vocals), Chris Bruno (guitar and vocals), Manny Pena (bass), and Ron Wagenhoffer (drums/percussion).
An ever-evolving collection of dynamic musicians founded by father-and-son duo John and Matt Check, the band first broke onto the local music scene at Asbury Park’s legendary The Stone Pony in September 2010. Since, the band has gone on to play shows in both New Jersey and New York, including stops at Architekt, Bar East, The Court Tavern and The Stanhope House.
What started just a few years ago as a young Matt Check’s aspirations to start his own band has evolved into something much more. Now a whirlwind of transcendental sound, The Knight Owls’ influences include The Allman Brothers Band, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, Muddy Waters, Neil Young and many more. When asked about the what the future holds for TKO, Check readily shares......
“We're going to keep making music that encourages the mind to transcend. It's music conveys ideals and moods that are the pure expression of joy, all that opposes it, and everything in between. In addition, there has been a lot more room for me to express my poetry a bit more out front in the new music, which really comes through as a benefit, I feel. We're evolving...and in my belief for the better.”
As their music has evolved so has their line-up most recently parting ways with original founder John Check due to creative differences.
Bruno, a guitar aficionado and newest addition to the band, first crossed paths with The Knight Owls during a performance in New York. Several months later, he found himself adding his musical chops to the band’s second album Turning the Triad. Upon the release of the album in August 2012, his addition to the band was made official.
