When many people think of musical LEGENDS such as Stevie Wonder, Prince, Donny Hathaway, and Luther Vandross, they may think of high caliber of talent that each of these vocalists posses. Although they are well-known household names, they have paved the way for a new face and force to be reckoned with-- Felander. He is an extraordinary lyricist who brings a vibrant sound to the industry and adds the perfect combination of R&B, Pop, Soul, Dance, and Hip-Hop. Whether he sings on an upbeat record or a soul ballad, his emotion and passion shines through in every song. The industry should take note of this music sensation.
Felander is a native of Columbus, MS by way of Montgomery, AL. Like many other singers, he began his musical journey in church. He discovered his talents in music at the age of 4 from his single-parent mother of three, Tanyu Stevenson. She was a choir director. Felander considers Montgomery, AL as his hometown because his family moved there when he was 6 yrs old. While there, he got involved in many school productions, summer plays, musicals, and other extracurricular activities. Felander recalls his first “pinch me” moment in the 5th Grade during a solo performance of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” in his school production. His undeniable talents did not go unnoticed. Even then, his performances on stage resulted in many standing ovations.
From his undeniable singing abilities to his great stage presence, he proves that this is what he is born to do. He began to perform in local talent shows and functions. Once he entered high school, more opportunities opened up for him. At 14, Felander began to write and produce songs for himself and other independent artists around the area. He was hired to sing regularly by minor league baseball team, Montgomery Biscuits, and became known as the "Serenading Biscuit" from 2005-2007. Once Felander graduated from Jeff Davis HS, he attended Alabama A&M University. During his time there, Opera and Classical music played a major role in repertoire as he became a member of the University Choir. Felander has had the pleasure of performing for many organizations including the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference), and both Democratic and Republican political parties.
Not only is Felander a well-embraced singer/ songwriter, he has also had the opportunity to grace the live theatre stage. His acting skills are SUPERB!! Felander has been acting for most of his life. He began at New Hope Elementary in 1st Grade under the direction of his teachers, Mrs. Burris & Mrs. Craddeth. From there, he was bit by the "acting bug." Not long after that, he performed in a lot of school productions. Felander's mom, Tanyu, saw his strong interest in the arts so she enrolled him in the summer theatre camps, TAPS & CAMP 3T. Both camps hosted at Alabama State University under the direction of world renowned actress, Dr. Tonea Stewart. "Teaching the world of theatre, all while building self-esteem, character and confidence through singing, acting and dancing" is one of the objectives for the programs. That's exactly what Felander grasped. Felander now has a ton of shows under his belt and he continues to be the showstopper in every show that he is a part of. Some of his credits include: "HARPO" in Color Purple the Musical, "DONKEY" in Shrek the Musical, "ANDRE" in Ain’t Misbehavin’, "MC/WAYNE/Ensemble" in DREAMGIRLS, " JUDAS US/ THOMAS" in Jesus Christ Superstar, and "JACOBE" in La Cage aux Folles just to name a few.
