The Bag of Rats musical world, like the world of their furry namesakes, has no borders. They draw on Country, Blues, Punk, Jazz and Traditional songs and tunes, as well as their own original material, to create their verminous, psychedelic concoction. Committed to the swing and primal throb of traditional music, Bag of Rats play with joyous abandon that produces enough energy to give you sunburn.
Underpinning their music is a rumbling, rolling Bass Guitar; Percussion that includes Darabuka, Conga, Snare-Drum and Washboard; and string busting rhythm Guitar. This is combined with cider fuelled psychedelic Fiddle, which is by turns ethereal, creepy and manic (sometimes all at once) and finger blistering Melodeon that ROCKS. Added to this is occasional chiming Mandola, jazzy Flute and blues Harp.
Their material stretches from traditional protest songs such as “The Begging Song” and “Song of The Times”, through covers of songs by Richard Thompson, Billy Bragg, Hank Williams and The Beat, along with traditional and original tunes, and original songs that are toe-tappingly dark and cheerfully melancholic. All arranged and played in the unmistakable Rat style for nearly 7 years.
Bag of Rats have enthralled their own fans and have gained new ones along the way supporting the likes of Hayseed Dixie and 3 Daft Monkeys and have played at numerous festivals including Glastonbury, Priddy Folk Festival & Burnham-on-Sea Folk Fest and at the great Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival in July 2011.
Bag of Rats re-launched themselves back in April with their brand new album “Ever After Nothing” and is available to buy on www.bagofrats.co.uk and www.acornmusic.co.uk and at gigs.
So come and spend some time on planet Bag of Rats; just remember your sun block!
Bag of Rats are Mike Hall, Ian Olliver, John Archer, Mary Gilmour & Simon Hester.
