Natasha Awuku comes from unlikely beginnings; a classically trained pianist that went on to become a singer and rapper. Born in east London with Jamaican and Ghanaian heritage, Natasha was influenced early on by different musical genres which no doubt contributed to her style, Lauryn Hill meets Nina Simone with a definitive urban, London sound. Ever the rule bender, the multi-instrumentalist once performed her own version of Bohemian Rhapsody at a classical concert, much to her music teacher’s dismay but this experimental approach quickly grabbed the attention of urban and dance music producers. Big names, the likes of Basement Jaxx, would soon feature Natasha’s vocals. Taking time to hone her style, and music production skills, Natasha’s lyrics are engaging, honest and always vivid, played out against distinctive R&B and Hip Hop production. Released in 2012, Natasha’s debut single, Stress Free, is a fast catchy anthem, so inspiring that DJ’s across Europe have produced various dance remixes.
Live, Natasha segues seamlessly between song, beatboxing and rap, showcasing original material and thoughtfully crafted covers and is “London’s most soulful singer, songwriter and music producer” according to Hotstepz magazine. Experience Natasha’s energetic showcases at venues such as east London’s Rich Mix and Camden’s Roundhouse.
Natasha’s mellower and soulful side comes to the fore in her second single, Superman, a piano-led ballad about a regular guy’s struggle to find a better life which sees her moving in a different musical direction while maintaining her Hip Hop style. Natasha is currently working on an EP and has plans for further releases in 2014.
As a former catwalk model, Natasha’s love of fashion and entrepreneurial spirit inspired her to create a fashion label, Sound Couture, in 2010. Initially conceived as a record label to serve the release of her music, Sound Couture quickly became Natasha’s merchandising outlet and has since grown into a brand specialising in the customisation of sneakers. Clothing lines include sophisticated street wear in the form of leather appliquéd T-Shirts and some of the best pieces from the label include customised sneakers which Natasha creates herself; leopard Nike Air Force 1’s and gold glittered Adidas Samba’s.
