Founded in December 2009, The Memorials is a project spearheaded by Bay Area drumming prodigy, Thomas Pridgen. After a few years as drummer for The Mars Volta, Thomas turned his attention to forming his own group, which would incorporate a range of styles as diverse as the experiences of the bands members. Instead of becoming another rock bands’ heartbeat, the focus became collaborating with proficient musicians whom Thomas felt would help him fill a void he has seen in rock music throughout his entire life. Thomas quickly got in touch with friends and former students at the esteemed Berklee College of Music, Viveca Hawkins (vocals), and Nick Brewer (guitars), and asked them to join him in his newest endeavor. Thomas’ decision to record with his friends, yielded a family vibe that enabled a comfortable yet intense recording process. The groups’ assets were secured after a few additions, as Thomas drew on a bass, organs, synthesizers, and multiple percussive elements to help round out the sound. Thomas describes The Memorials’ first record,
“For me it was important to put a band together with my friends, and ya know, the record is a rollercoaster. Some songs are hard, but will make you cry by the end....”
