David Roof / Bio

My musical goal is to capture the inspiration that comes at the "roots" of all types of music. From early jazz, blues, rock-a-billy, British Invasion and many emerging artists, the best output has been the earliest work. There is a raw energy and authenticity to the sound that I aspire to in my playing. I love music from Louis Armstrong to the Beatles to Joni Mitchell and many more in between and from the outer realms.

My first professional gig was playing with the Ann Arbor Chamber Symphony on Trumpet accompanying a 3 day tour backing silent movies. My early playing was mostly on classical trumpet including the Adrian Symphony and Croswell Opera House Pit.

In college, I was a founding member of the Lollipop Guild (lead guitar). I had a brief stint as guitarist in the last incarnation of Frank Allison and the Odd socks before moving on to play trumpet and upright bass with the Imperial Swing Orchestra. As the Imperial Swing Orchestra was winding down (2000), I joined Tom Maxwell (of the Squirrel Nut Zippers) on his solo tour playing trumpet and guitar. That summer and the following year, I played and recorded "13 to go" with the Starlight Drifters. Between the 2 groups, I toured 40 states in clubs and on festival stages.

As I started a family and settled back in Michigan, I have play actively with Nobody's Business, Dick Siegel and the Brandos, and Kentucky Chrome, the Vibratrons and more recently the Scott Martin Band as well as an occasional solo gig. I also fill in with any number of other acts around the state as a freelance bass, guitar and trumpeter.

I have recently released my solo record of British Invasion influenced rock. Stay tuned and check this page for all my engagements!
