gods joke is the kind of band you either love or hate. musically the goal is not to repeat the same song for eternity so like the weather in texas, if you dont like it just wait 5 minutes. influences include smashing pumpkins, nirvana, sonic youth, local h, the pixies, and beatles.
the story starts and ends with dennis berry. the founder and principle writer through several line up changes started with ambitions of world domination but not for selfish reasons. the theory that to get bad music off of the radio you have to replace it with good music and bands that will continuously do what is right as opposed to cashing a check was the original drive for the band.
with three albums under their belt and one being released in 2012 berry has withstood drug addiction, homelessness, incarceration, and his own ego and has somehow come out on top. gods joke is really about taking negative circumstances and finding the positive.
rounding out the lineup are skye on bass and ben burkland on drums who bring a life to the band that berry could not achieve alone. its the chemistry between the three that has people excited for the coming year. produced by berry and robby baxter of red star recording the band has actually scrapped an entire double album and started from scratch just to make sure it is held to the highest standard. over 50 songs were tracked and it looks like 18 will make the cut. "man plans and god laughs" will be released in the summer of 2012. its the kind of album bands used to make where a feeling connects the songs without getting in the way of itself. in a world of singles and itunes the album is becoming a lost format and gods joke believes that is a mistake. if you are looking just to be entertained gods joke recomends buy a britney spears album, but if you want something that means more, something to make you feel emotion, something the artist had to fight to make, then gods joke might be your new favorite band.
