Oldboy is a rock-folk band whose music runs the gamut from wistful to epic folk to downright heavy rock and roll. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, a city known to be a part of the rust belt of America, Oldboy really shines – out loud.
At the band’s helm and on lead vocals is Shawn Brewster. The band has come a long way in the past four years and has definitely found as Shawn likes to say, “what works for them and their music”. In fact, Oldboy traces its roots back as a solo project with a desire to “fill out his sound” but now Shawn now comprises one fourth of the band Oldboy.
Backing Shawn in vocals and manning his “2 string bass guitar” is Michael Kinsella. On guitar is Pete Simon, a longtime friend of Shawn and what one would call a “gear head”. Pete’s vintage collection of guitars and amps could have its own museum exhibit. Rounding out the band on drums is Greg Hyland. A seasoned drummer in the Cleveland music scene, Greg has also known Shawn for years so playing together in Oldboy just works.
The band understands the blue collar mentality of musicians. working hard to put together good music, and good shows. Oldboy has played with national acts such as John Oates, Langhorne Slim, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Wheel, Joe Pug, and The Low Anthem.
Oldboy just released their debut full length album Covered in Sound. The album according to Cleveland Scene Magazine has a ” cool, cinematic quality to it”. The band wanted to keep the album production in their hometown, so they recorded it at the Whiteout Audio Studios in Cleveland.
Following the recent release of Oldboy’s breakout album, Covered in Sound the group embarked on a regional tour to promote its hard work and original sound. The group is also working touring in 2014 including a stop at Austin, Texas’s massive South by Southwest’s Music Festival.
