Ryan Locke is an independent Canadian artist, emerging into the music scene as a singer/songwriter in 2010.
From a young age, Ryan was inspired by blues, pop and R&B. Legendary songwriters left a lasting impression on the young artist’s mind. At the age of 10, recognized for an innate musical talent he began a piano scholarship, promptly switching to guitar as a primary songwriting colour. At age seventeen, Ryan was composing music and performing on stages in Toronto.
2007, Ryan ambitiously took on the role as drummer in Toronto’s thrash metal group, My Flea Circus, instantly adopted a love for the new instrument. After 8 months with the group, they traveled to Germany and toured as the opening act for a German band. Over the course of three years, My Flea Circus recorded 2 EP’s and one LP titled Flee Flaa Floo, released three music videos and performed between LA and Frankfurt.
By 2010, Ryan’s musical influences began to change. Inspired and starry eyed by the greatest singers in music, he began vocal training and ignited a career as a singer/songwriter. He gigged the Toronto circuit, appearing at The Cameron House, Velvet Underground, Bovine Sex Club, Rivoli, The Drake, El Mocambo, and Horseshoe Tavern. A highlight of his early career was performing in Los Angeles’ infamous The Viper Room.
In 2011, Ryan debut an EP titled Swinging Through The Vines, under the pseudonym, Laffhappy. He released three music videos from this release. Soon, Ryan began appearing on stage with different instrumentalists; typically accompanied by a bassist and drummer. Among other accomplishments, Ryan’s music video’s air on local TV stations, has music featured in short films, interviews in magazines and on radio, and winning an award at Centennial College for the official music video, Swinging Through The Vines.
2012 – 2013 were years of change and opportunity. Relocating from Toronto, Ryan immersed himself in the Edmonton music scene and built a name as an singer/songwriter. He became known for nostalgic guitar work and bluesy vocalism as a weekly performer at Mercer Tavern; an acoustic show aired on Edmonton’s Guerrilla Radio. Ryan has also performed at Tavern On Whyte, JLS Night Market, The Artery, Edmonton International Fringe Festival, Ashmont Canada Day Festival, Velvet Olive, Pub 1824, Grant MacEwan College, HMV Stage in West Edmonton Mall, Wunderbar, O2′s Taphouse and Grill, Roast Coffeehouse, Cha Island, Brixx, Bohemia, The Treasury and more.
2014 is looking bright. Ryan has picked up piano again and composed a record which has since been recorded at Blackbox Studios. The official launch of the record titled Unconditional is June 7, 2014 at Filthy McNasty’s in Edmonton. A follow up album is also currently under composition.
Ryan has an earnest passion for expression and entertainment. Striving to detach his listeners from the phaneron and inhale a bursting radiation of solace and rapture. Ryan’s stage presence is passionate, hypnotic and captive as he transcribes emotion to harmony.
