Avenues / Press

“Some albums remind you of an era. That can be a two edged sword, depending on the era. Avenues’ Creep Show EP transports me to one of my favorite musical times – 1990s punk. If your mind just conjured up the sounds of Green Day, or Offsprings numerous hits, then shame on you. I’m talking of the indie punk explosion that brought Epitaph Records to its current status, Lookout Records in its heyday and the early releases of Fat Wreck Chords. In the early 90s these labels cranked out one high quality band after another that mixed pop punk with enough piss and vinegar to avoid radio clichés. Avenues has chosen that road, and the result is pretty stellar. Avenues have honed their craft to a point where I can only liken them to the best of what the genre has to offer. There are no sloppy performances on this release, and the production is crisp, allowing the band’s powerful approach to speak clearly to the masses. Punk rock is back, and its name is Avenues.”

“Avenues kicked off the show at the Country Saloon, a venue I end up at every year for one show or another. The guys in this band have a really melodic and fun sound; I am glad we showed up early to catch them. I highly recommend them if you’re looking to discover some new music.”

“Sunday Night Strung Out, 88 Fingers Louie, Pulley, Avenues; Country Saloon If you aren't at the Country Saloon on Sunday night, U R doing it wr0ng. First of all, the headliner is Strung Out. Has any other band so perfectly epitomized what being a '90s punk was all about? Driving tempos, metalish solos and introspective lyrics. This is a band that rocks, that has a brain, too. Plus, those solos, man, those solos! On top of that, you've got 88 Fingers Louie, Pulley and Avenues. This is basically all the best parts of those Fat comps on a single bill. Go to this show. You owe it to your '90s self. --John Gentile”

“A band that got also its start in Milwaukee but has made it a little bigger now is Avenues, a pop-punk quartet pieced together from several disbanded Milwaukee groups. A mix of Blink-182 and Allstar Weekend, Avenues’ sound is highly harmonic and their lyrics brim with angst and emotion. The band band just released a new single titled “Messin’ Around” on Oct. 10, and they are currently in the process of writing a few more songs. In the past year, the country has seen this quartet perform with The House That Jack Built, Lights Over Bridgeport, and Buzzcocks. The boys will hopefully be on tour again shortly after their next album is released.”

“Milwaukee based punks Avenues are giving their entire back-catalogue away for free via BandCamp to celebrate the festive season. The material includes recent single ‘Messin’ Around’, as well as the fittingly festive ‘Punk Rock Christmas’.”

“On the poppier end of the punk spectrum, Avenues bestowed the gift of a catchy Christmas track last December. While the song about Santa, Rudolph, and “the whole damn bunch” sharing “a pint of holiday cheer” toes the line of being too repetitive in just over two minutes, we’d much prefer this to the brain-burrowing monotony of “Carol Of The Bells” and most other trite yuletide staples.”

“As generally awful as Christmas carols and other winter hymns tend to be, you have to hand it to Milwaukee bands for at least trying to spice up the holiday music canon, instead of just relying on the likes of Bing Crosby, Mariah Carey, and Mannheim Steamroller to provide the traditional means of seasonal torture. In recent years, Avenues wrote and recorded “Punk Rock Christmas.” Direct Hit! covered Priceduifkes’ “I Ain’t Dreaming Of A White Christmas” to raise money to offset the loss of their stolen van and gear, and Whiskeybelles dressed up seasonal standards with country-fied three-part harmonies in their Nothin’ Says Christmas Like Whiskey last year.”

“Wisconsin pop punk bands Avenues and Jetty Boys have announced they will be releasing a single split titled “Jumping Ship.” The release is part of their concert cruise show aboard the 200 passenger Vista King which will take place on Lake Michagan in Milwaukee on August 23rd.”

“AVENUES Release New Single “Delaware” For Pay What You Want on BandCamp; Postcards From Ann Arbor LP Out June 11 on StayPosi Records Recorded and produced by the band with help from legendary producer Matt Allison at Atlas Studios in Chicago, Post Cards from Ann Arbor, the upcoming LP from Milwaukee, WI’s Avenues, is the band’s first release on indie label Stayposi Records. “Working with Matt is a sort of a punk rock rite of passage for bands like ours” said drummer Joel Maske. The EP is best described as Midwestern punk. Pop laden songs with angsty blue collar lyrics and plenty of whoa oh’s. Avenues has clearly been around the block and have some stories to tell. The single “Delaware” was released on May 7th for pay anything you want: http://stayposirecords.bandcamp.com/track/delaware. Postcards from Ann Arbor will be released on June 11th Digital + Vinyl.”

“Thursday, Jan. 2: Avenues with Lights Over Bridgeport and Lost Years (StayPosi Records showcase) @ Frank's Power Plant, 9 p.m. StayPosi Records has an interesting business model. Along with releasing records by small independent artists, it puts a portion of its sales towards charity. Frank's will showcase three of its bands, including Milwaukee pop-punks Avenues, fresh off the release of holiday Christmas single "Punk Rock Christmas."”

“Milwaukee pop punk group Avenues have just come out with a single titled “Jumping Ship”, and they are now streaming it online. You can check it out below.Avenues’ latest EP Postcards From Ann Arbor, which was recorded with Alkaline Trio producer Matt Allison, was released in 2013 via Stayposi Records.”

“Adam Yauch aka MCA of The Beastie Boys has been an inspiration to all the members in Avenues. We have lost a great person and he will be missed. We recorded a version of Heart Attack Man by The Beastie Boys in his honor. This track is free for download. Please share this track with everyone....Beastie Boys fan or not. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHd0lewOroE”

“Top 10 Picks For December 10. Avenues gives the gift of “PUNK ROCK CHRISTMAS” If your senses aren’t inundated with holiday cheer yet, local pop-punkers Avenues wrapped up its own take on the yuletide standards with “PUNK ROCK CHRISTMAS” – an admittedly repetitive, but fun Christmas carol.”

“Avenues is a punk/power pop quartet from Milwaukee, Wisconsin formed in 2009 by Vin Smith ( Guitar & Vocals ), Joel Maske ( Drums ), Shawn Brooks ( Guitar ), and Scott Brooks ( Bass ). In the fall of 2011 Avenues ventured to Hollywood, California to record their debut EP with Grammy nominated producer/engineer Davey Julson-Rieley at godaveygo Studio. This EP has something for everyone from the pop influenced song "Hold Me" (in early April Avenues will be shooting a music video for "Hold Me") to the driving - darker and lyrical content of "Old Number One". This EP release is targeted for early in 2012.”
