I guess the earliest thing I remember about me and music was staring up at the moon and signing a little song. Texas highways are long and my family drove often. Twin brothers in the back seat, little sister on Mama’s lap, Daddy at the wheel and me laying down in the rear window back when their used to be a sizable “shelf” behind the back seat. I remember staring out into the night, touching the cold back windshield and singing a little song I made up. My brother Jim said he liked it and a big brothers praise goes a long way.
Since then I’ve written a few musicals, a screenplay about the Blues, got a song or two in movies I’ve acted in and performed in clubs, churches, theatres and may one day hit a street corner near you. I love too many styles of music not to try and do them all: Prince, Dylan, musical theatre, Classical, the Blues, a little country, Blue Grass, Allison Krauss, Son House, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Johnny Shines, Billy Joel, Tom Waits, U2, the Cure, Pink Floyd, Janes Addiction, Aaron Copland, Alicia Keyes, White Stripes and on a day when I’m feelin’ real funky I can even get into this hear now thing they do call rap – maybe my stage name should be Mr. Eclectic.
My clearest understanding of music is that it’s a tool to transform confusion, pain and the mysteries of love and life into clarity and cohesion. It is the language we speak to one another to try and understand and communicate the heart of God. Or it’s just a sexy 12 bar blues telling a raunchy story from a ne’er do well in “love”. It is all that we are but it can be all that we hope to be when the angels of our better nature find a home in our broken hearts. So here’s my stuff. There is no perfection here but a heart in flux between heaven and hell reaching, always reaching -- for paradise.
