KINGS OF SPADE / Press

“Alternative rock, garage rock, blues-rock, the genre is difficult to qualify, in any case it swings. KC, the singer, has a magnetic presence for the eyes and ears. Her voice is powerful and naturally bluesy. Jesse on the guitar, boosted, sends us superb solos. We also appreciate the beautiful bass line by Tim and Matt's masterful drum set. Kings of Spade is a band full of energy. The musicians are acclaimed by the public. It was a great discovery, thanks to the Forum for finding us this group!”

“Based in Hawaii, Kings of Spade blew everyone away! I was not surprised having caught them as openers for the Cathouse 30th Birthday celebrations in Hollywood. While Vocalist KC looked straight out of late seventies Carnaby Street with her perfect pink Mohican, she is backed by guitarists channeling the American South and a drummer who looked down with LA. Their music was a sophisticated palette of Blues Rock illustrated beautifully by KC’s amazing voice which at times recalled Aretha Franklin, Patsy Cline, Lynne Jackaman and Alison Moyet and, basically, all those moments when a female voice was so good it gave you goose-bumps. While she looked like she could knock your teeth out, instead she blew your socks off and was capable of summoning both the soft voice of an angel and the most heart wrenching, Blues-soaked screams you will hear.”

“Appearances can certainly be deceptive. The beardy guitarist and bassist and hairy drummer all look as though they’ve stepped out of one of those meth-dealing backwoods stoner crews, while the out-and-very-proud-indeed singer, who seems to have acquired Doug Pinnick’s old mohican and dyed it bright pink, looks as though she ought to be in a punky riot grrrl outfit. Turns out they sound like none of the above, playing classy, soulful hard rock with a relentlessly funky groove topped by KC's powerhouse vocals, which are very much in the Janis Joplin/Aretha Franklin arena.”

“Kings of Spade came out very energetic; fronted by the powerful vocals of KC, the band came to kick some ass. The band’s performance was a demonstration of what has made them a band on the rise. Their style is a blend of island, funk, reggae, and according to Kasi herself “it’s all blues, because that seems to be the only genre we agree on collectively.””

“Middle-slotted act Kings of Spade accomplished what many contend cannot be done: totally win over an audience impatient for the headliner. Much of this hinged on the powerhouse vocals of consummate punk-looking KC, the solid beats of friendly drummer Matt Kato and the band's bold and willing interaction with the crowd. The (normally malevolent provincial L.A. gang challenge) query of "where are you from" was met with the cheery rejoinder of "We're from Hawaii!"”
