Mahoney & The Moment / Bio

The Mahoney & The Moment story begins way before their current fame and notoriety, and in the back room of an East Village, New York City bar named 'Sidewalk Cafe'.

At the time London singer-songwriter & onion salesman Steve Mahoney was living above & working day shifts in a rat-ridden Manhattan bar, where punters would either fall asleep at the bar, leave without paying, or use the toilets and leave.

Steve was recruiting hot young musicians and potential life partners for a Folk & Bluegrass 'competition', where the winners received free cans of PBR and a hangover.

Enter Emily Moment, a Boston born actor, singer and regular on the East Village 'Anti-Folk scene. Controversially, Emily had decided as a New Year's resolution to pursue most opportunities that came her way, which led her to taking part & singing on Steve's classic album 'When You Least Expect' in the spring of 2010.
A further collaboration followed in the form of Emilys solo adventure 'Never Enough' also in 2010, along with several low budget comedic documentaries.

In January 2011 over fajitas in their beloved Astoria, Queens.. Mahoney & The Moment were formed. Taking their cue from everything from Chas & Dave to ZZ Top, the band have lovingly been described as 'wonderful as a babys smile', and comparatively: 'If She & Him were real human beings; they would be like Mahoney & The Moment.'

In September that year, Mahoney & The Moment produced and released their self-titled, full-length debut to critical acclaim and toured across the US.
This first album, a folk record featuring fiddles, mandolins, and a country sensibility introduced their ability to weave meaningful lyrics with soaring harmonies.

For some reason, In 2012 the band relocated to London. Irrespective of finances or living arrangements, they immediately toured the UK, and were featured on BBC 6 music with their hit, 'If You Only Asked Me To'. Lines formed around street corners, new upbeat UK fans were eager to hear this unique cocktail of eclectic and wonderful sounds.

In 2012, the band turned down the invitation to play at the London Olympics, and instead produced and released ‘The Start‘, a detailed and cinematic documentary about the recording of their first album & US tour:

The saga continued in April 2013, which saw the release of the sophomore album, ‘Don’t Say No!’.
A new turn of style with darker themes and big horns and recorded wholly in London whilst under the influence of stress & road rage, ‘Don’t Say No!’ chronicles Steve & Emily's New York bar days. It has been called “a variety of heartfelt, warming songs that will doubtless see them making waves in the near future”.

The band spent a large part of 2015 fishing & living off the land in rural Hungary, as well as recording their forthcoming 3rd album 'Confession Note'.

‘Confession Note’ was recorded with little fuss at Soup Studio in unfashionable East London, with Simon Trought (Johnny Flynn, The Kills, John Grant) with strong brothership and guest appearances from the legendary Sam Beer (Treetop Flyers, The Jimi Hendrix Experience), Barbara Bartz and Ashley Hallinan.

In case anyone wants to get out of the house or look up from their device..
Mahoney & The Moment continue to run 'Chalk Farm Folk', an acclaimed Americana live music night at The Monarch in Camden now in it's 3rd year, where they are the resident band and perform offline.
