In 1998, after spending the better part of his professional career on the business side of the entertainment business, Rick Busby returned to his first loves of songwriting and performing. In 2003, he released his debut CD, "Soul Diving," which went on to garner two nominations in the Texas Music Academy's 2004 Texas Music Awards, including a Song of the Year nod for the song "Pray" and a Producer of the Year nomination for Mark Addison.
A copy of the record wound up in the hands of ASG Executive Director, Lee Duffy, who was then in her first year as a Board Member for the Austin Songwriters Group. An introduction was arranged and the beginning of a collaboration, now in its 9th year, began between the two. In 2004, Rick also became an ASG Board Member and, in late 2007, he became ASG President. He continues to serve ASG in both capacities.
As President and Director of the Austin Songwriters Group, he regularly facilitates and manages songwriter workshops and seminars throughout the year, and serves as ASG's Song Doctor on an ongoing basis. Along the way, Busby accidentally fell into a songwriting teacher role ancillary to his service at ASG, and now facilitates ongoing monthly classes for songwriters in Austin and Beaumont, Texas.
Most recently, he completed the recording of a brand new album, produced by Stephen Doster, that is set for release in late Summer 2012. The record, titled "Strawberry Moon," features six original songs (one of which is a co-write with frequent collaborator, Lenny Cochrun), as well as songs by Stephen Doster, Bob Cheevers, Rick Danna and Gordon Lightfoot.
He continues to perform regularly in the Beaumont-based band "The Rick Show," which also features songwriter and creative brother Rick Danna, along with several of the players who helped record "Strawberry Moon". In Austin, he mostly performs as a solo songwriter throughout the year. In addition, he also hosts ASG songwriter open mic shows throughout the year, and The Coffeehouse Concert Series, a monthly songwriter show at Unity Church of the Hills of Austin.
Late in 2011, while recording "Strawberry Moon," Busby was elected to the Board of Directors of KOOP Radio, Austin's community-based, cooperative radio station, and was recently installed as KOOP Board Vice-President for 2012.
