In 5th grade they passed out papers to the class & said "If you'd like to learn to play an instrument, choose one on the page, circle it, write your name on the top and hand it in." As I started to circle drums, the teacher said "...we don't have a drum teacher right now, so if you pick drums you will have to find a teacher.", so I erased drums and circled Saxophone! I haven't stopped since then.
In high school I was in band & jazz ensemble, and studied with Rick Modery. I pursued a music degree at West Virginia University studying under David Hastings and Curtis Johnson. Hastings was a student of Fred Hemke, and Hemke was a student of Professor Marcel Mule at the Paris Conservatory of Music, France. At WVU I performed in the Mountaineer Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet, & Small Jazz Groups.
Professionally I have pushed the envelope for saxophone exploring numerous genres including many where a sax typically isn't used. My influences are Dean Fraser, King Curtis Ousley, Michael Brecker, Maceo Parker, Zoot Simms, Phil Woods, & Clarence Clemmons.
