Katie Elevitch is a live-wire rock artist with deep soul: A little bit Patti Smith, a little bit Stevie Nicks; Equal parts fearless smart strut and sensual songstress sensitivity.
Called a "Rock Siren (who) will someday rank up there with Nina Simone and Patti Smith" (Lucid Culture) - Katie is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer whose recorded music and live performances have been praised by The New York Times, The Village Voice, and The Big Takeover, among others. Katie has toured internationally and nationally, including playing a multi-city tour of Germany.
With her band, that includes noted NYC-based musicians Riley McMahon (guitar/keys), Jonathan Maron (bass) and Adrian Harpham (drums), Katie traverses a sonic landscape that echoes the best of 70's pop/rock, classic and alternative rock, exploring and pushing the boundaries of her diverse musical vocabulary (Jazz, Rock, Soul, Funk, Folk, Classical). As bandleader, Katie stretches her song structure in live jams and explores alternate recording arrangements.
Solo or in duo form with her longtime collaborator/producer Riley McMahon, Katie finds an equally powerful sonic expression through only her voice and guitar/piano. She takes the catharsis of her rock band's connection and exploration and turns it inward, finding a more restrained, yet equally transformative way to interpret her songs, focussing in on her lyrics, storytelling between songs and taking advantage of the quiet to showcase her vocal range and rich tone.
Her 2008 sophomore release, "Kindling for the Fire", called "almost savage in its primal power" by The Big Takeover, was also listed as one of the best albums of 2008 by NYC's Lucid Culture. She currently is preparing to release a 3-song EP "Songs for the Wounded Gods" and plans to begin recording newer songs to add to this collection for an LP release.
In 2011, in the spirit of pushing boundaries, Katie conceived of and recorded a mostly instrumental / experimental full-length album, "Brilliance & Light", inspired by year-long intensive yoga study and teacher certification program. Riley McMahon was instrumental as producer. Katie plans to release and promote this music in 2012 to the yoga and world/experimental music communities.
Riley and Katie are currently in pre-production on songs and musical pieces that focus on a more acoustic, piano driven, intimate sound that links their writing and creative processes from their earlier work together with the newer, more experimental approach of "Brilliance & Light".
