Born and raised in North Central Texas, USA. The first record I ever bought was "I Smell a Rat, Baby" by Big Mama Thornton. No idea why; somehow her persona intrigued me I suppose. Had never even heard of her. Man, she was strong. As a kid I joined the rest of the family gathered around Aunt Willie Mae's piano harmonizing mostly to gospel tunes and an occasional Stephen Foster song. It was a magic time of learning. On Saturday nights a few of us boys would take a leap and listen to 'Cat's Caravan' Blues Show by Jim Lowe, coming out of Dallas, Texas. Without doubt, we knew we were on the absolute outer edge of civility. We heard stuff we had never dreamed of like Lightnin' Hopkins and Blind Lemmon Jefferson. Along with the Clovers, the Midnighters, the Spiders and a host of other artists, our lives began to change with the amazing unauthorized music that we were hearing.
