When Forces of Nature compliment each other, instead of colliding, beautiful creations are manifested. Welcome to the Hippie Thug Family. Hippie Thugs are not only making great music together, they’re making life happen.
D Craz (pronounced D Craze) moved from California to Phoenix as a teenager; shortly after, he and one of his cousins formed YBM (Young Black Mafia) as a “Street Organization.” After serving some time D Craz had a different outlook on life. He hooked up with his cousin Wimpp Dawg (a Phoenix Native), and with the same intensity, hustle, and love for the “game” focused YBM’s efforts into making music. Over the next ten years YBM launched two albums (Da First Step, and Kinfolk Fo’ Life), and performed with numerous mainstream artists in over five-hundred shows; including a guest appearance at the D-Rock Celebrity All-Star Game in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
D Craz met D Blacc Blacc (also a Phoenix Native) while smoking a “blunt” with him at work. Soon after they were also sharing songs and stages.
YBM eventually “hooked” up with Lean and Izzy of Purp Nasty. That’s when the perpetual “peanut butter met the chocolate.” Purp Nasty recorded their first song when they were in junior high together using a simple “app” they downloaded online. Since then Lean has graduated from the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences (Gilbert, AZ), worked in different Los Angeles studios, and has helped numerous AZ artists find their own sound by serving them as both engineer and producer. Purp Nasty released two mixed tapes in 2010; Saturday Night Fever, and The Chronicles. Shortly after that Lean started recording YBM and D Blacc Blacc and what ensued next can only be described as a prescription from heaven.
Welcome to the Hippie Thug Movement.
It starts off with some “airy canna-blessed-shroom” induced beats from Purp Nasty. Next the studio, affectionately known to the YBM Family as “The Room” gets filled up with magic smoke, and the “Hippie Thug” train starts rolling. Usually they first come up with a vibe that sets the vibe of the song. D Craz is the ultimate story teller, then Lean makes them think, and when it comes to D Blacc Blacc, he simply “murders” every track he touches. After it’s laid out Lean mixes the “magic potion” with the artfulness of Michael Angelo. After that all you have to do is add Ryan The Drummer, and guitarist LB Compton (both out of Eloy, AZ) to the live shows and the formula to blow your mind is created.
The entire YBM Family is comprised of YBM (D Craz and Wimpp Dawg), Purp Nasty (Lean and Izzy, Ryan The Drummer, and LB Compton), D Blacc Blacc, spoken word artist The Warrior Poet, and the family’s youngest artist Dirty The Kid. The family is very close to finishing four projects. A double CD entitled “Something to Smoke To...Something to Ride
“We’re here to let the world know that there’s something to be said besides that “stuff” on the radio. Rap is meant to teach the “game,” and people been getting lied too,” states D Craz. Lean adds, “People are afraid of the truth, because they don’t know what it is anymore, so they let fear rule their lives. We’re giving people our hearts so they don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
