JOANNA BARBERA is an Austin, TX based singer, songwriter and instrumentalist. Her musical roots lie in the world of folk, but with her anticipated sophomore album, Forget, Barbera presents the perfect collision of solid rock and power prose. The album blends layers of sounds, over dense, textured instrumentals. Joanna’s fearless approach has catapulted her into a new direction—one she speaks of as an ongoing process of moving on and leaving the past behind. She describes the songs on the record as her way of finding a new sense of home and security.
Untamed by the orthodoxy of a label, Barbera truly is a self-made artist, baring her soul in pursuit of a dream that is quickly becoming reality. Touring nationally after the release of her debut album, Carnival Beginning, she has performed in famed venues including the Living Room (New York City), Antone’s (Austin, TX), Ani DiFranco’s the Ninth Ward at Babeville (Buffalo, NY) and the Hotel Café (Los Angeles, CA). Her sultry vocals and intimate performances have led to shared stages with Sharon Van Etten, Mindy Smith, Melissa Ferrick, and Hamell on Trial. She is also slated to perform with indie phenoms Quiet Company, The Tontons, and as a featured performer at the W Hotels “Living Room Live” series.
A reflection of her upbringing in the Hudson Valley, her rustic, heart-bleeding sound has been compared to the likes of Cat Power, Elliot Smith, and Bruce Springsteen, but there is no question her voice, music, and artistry are uniquely her own. Her vulnerability leads to performances that are powerful and raw; her voice lingering long after the singing is done. Forget is due for release in June 2013.
