You don’t know it yet, but you need it. You want it. The Gray washes over you like an addiction in the color of music. This is a band that possesses the rare ability to live within power and grace at the same time. There is the slight flavor of mischief and memory in the lyrics that paint pictures and sounds that create emotion in the middle of your mind. So much energy rarely comes from so few people. This is the gift that has been given to the men of The Gray.
The Gray dumped the clutch out of the gate, swinging hard at all comers. Their first show was attended by a capacity crowd. And it is no wonder. The band contains Cary Becker, a local guitar legend. Chris Herrick, an unknown musical assassin. Jason Vannoy, a road worn veteran of the North Carolina music scene and Tommy Ryan, an honest to god pirate steering the ship into hard waters. After a painstaking search Robbie Jenkins brought his drumming skills in to finish the lineup. After their first show The Gray became an immediate local favorite with a rabid and dedicated fan base. Their social media following is not only national, but global, and The Gray consistently sit atop the Reverb Nation pages for online plays. The Gray was soon tapped to open up for touring national acts like Saving Abel, Saint Diablo, Tom Keifer and Great White. The band quickly became a regional act touching all corners of North Carolina and the surrounding states.
The sound encompasses a wide variety of influences from several genres and artists both new and old. You can feel old school sounds like AC/DC, and Alice in Chains living side by side with bands like Clutch and Down. Underneath all this is a rhythmic foundation born from face melting rock and fluid instrumental harmonic interplay between the twin guitar attack of Becker and Harrick, held aloft with the solid foundation of Vannoy’s bass and Jenkin’s unexpected drumming. Music like this has to make you feel something and Tommy Ryan’s vocals are peppered with enough personal experience and emotional expression to move anybody’s soul. You can’t buy this, you can’t fake this, you can only experience it as it flows over you and owns every bit of your senses. Just ask anybody who has seen The Gray live, you won’t walk away the same as you walked in. You will leave as part of the family and won’t be able to wait for the next reunion.
