“… Johnny Never is the real deal!! Delta and Piedmont blues rarely heard this far north! A rare treat.” - Dave Strickler – Baltimore Blues Society.
“It's rare these days to hear (Delta blues) music played and your performance at the CDBS moved me emotionally. You and Zep are the real deal!” - Barry Pugh, President, Central Delaware Blues Society
A life-long devotee of roots blues, Johnny Never studied Delta and Piedmont Blues for decades before he began performing in 2006. He quickly became a Philadelphia regional favorite. In 2011 he and his band were selected by the Philadelphia Folksong Society to perform in a concert honoring the 100th birthday of Delta blues legend, Robert Johnson. They were the only local act to take the stage.
It was there Johnny met Seth Holzman. Seth is a phenomenal harmonica player who earned the moniker, “Zep Harpo” while performing with Otis Lees Simmons. Zep has accompanied many blues legends on stage including Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor, Ronnie Earl, Magic Slim and Dave Honey Boy Edwards.
Together, Johnny and Zep churn out a blues magic that is infused with mojo, spirit and authenticity. They have been referred to as “The Dynamic Duo of Delta Blues” offering up performances of soulful blues ballads, passionate Delta slide moans and driving Little Walter and Muddy Waters riffs. Johnny’s bold finger-style guitar work and passionate voice are complimented perfectly by Seth’s deep range of sounds and harmonica styles.
They are regular performers in venues and stages in the greater metropolitan area. In 2014 they were nominated for, and were quarter-finalists in, the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee where audiences were wowed by their passion and authenticity. One IBC judge wrote that Johnny and Zep’s “great stage presence, passionate performance and excellent technical skills” make them “ready for prime time.” Johnny and Zep have shared the bill with national blues acts in major local blues festivals and have been recognized by blues societies in the greater metropolitan area as one of the most authentic Delta blues artists in the region. Fans of Tal Mahal, Keb Mo, Cephas and Wiggens, and the original blues men such as Robert Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Blake, and Son House will appreciate and love this dynamic duo of Delta blues.
“When you listen to the music of Johnny Never and Zep Harpo you will NEVER look back! They are as authentic as it gets” - Bob Corritore, Blues Harmonica, Delta Groove recording artist.
