ABOUT JEFF MOATS’ MUSIC
With a strong, clear tenor voice, JEFF MOATS records and performs a wide assortment of songs from the American songbook. Whether it is Folk, Country/Western or Rock, his music is well received.
From Traditional Folk Music to Flower Power-Pop, hi s style is “Freshly Familiar”, with music that inspires his listeners to add their voices to his; the older audiences reminisce and younger audiences are introduced to the classics of the past. Accompanying himself on the 6 & 12 string guitars, the 5 string banjo and harmonicas, he provides an appealing and unique sound.
Moats starting performing in 1976 on college campuses and in coffee houses. He performed extensively in the San Diego area in the 1980’s, bringing his music regularly to restaurant lounges such as the Hungry Hunter, Carlos Murphy’s, and the Ivy Barn Restaurant. During the 2000’s, he performed at the San Diego Folk Heritage Festival, for four consecutive years, sharing the stage with such luminaries as Pint & Dale, Peggy Watson, Randy Sterling, Patty Hall, and Sparky & Rhonda. In 2005, he was the musical emcee for the featured evening concert headlined by Tom Paxton. Also, twice he has enthralled audiences at the world-renowned Grand Canyon National Park’s Bright Angel Lodge.
Jeff’s admiration for early recording styles of the late 50’s and early 60’s has encouraged him to follow time-honored techniques in his own studio. While recording, Jeff engages the full use of digital multi-tracking techniques, combining multiple vocal and instrumental parts. Vocally, he uses accentuations, expressions, inflections and dynamics to color his voice without digital processing and enhancement. Instrumentally, he employs the 6 & 12 string guitars, the tenor guitar, the 5 string banjo, harmonicas, and bass guitar, in a natural tone without effects. Jeff records each track in one continuous “take”, without “punching in or out” or using any studio tricks or gimmicks. Although his renditions are refined and polished, sometimes he leaves in a diminutive imperfection to distinguish his music from the over-produced, auto-tuned and edited recordings of today. He strives to bring each song to life in a way that is true and organic with his unique folksy but contemporary sound.
The result of his labors is an entertaining repertoire that truly engages listeners with great vintage tunes.
Currently, Jeff is working as a recording artist in the Colorado area and performs at special engagements.
