Rowland has composed and arranged for a number of artists, bands and ensembles in the UK and around the world, covering many different music genres along the way. He has also composed for the BBC.
Composition commissions include those written for the percussion quartet Ensemble Bash, the contemporary music group The New Music Players who’s recording, Crying Bird, Echoing Star, features Rowland’s composition ‘Timeless Odyssey’ and is on the London Independent Records label. The adventurous organisation COMA, the worldly, contemporary classical ensemble Lontano who performed his work ‘Espiritu Libre’, at La Linea, the London Festival of Latin Music and for a recording by jazz trumpeter Chris Hogkins.
Rowland's composition Enlightenment (In the Spirit of A Love Supreme by John Coltrane) was commissioned by the curator Paul Bradshaw of Chaser Productions. The 2014 Meltdown Festival at the South Bank Centre, London, saw the work performed by a special 15 piece ensemble of remarkable UK based jazz and non-Western soloists and the Musical Director, Orphy Robinson. It was also recorded by BBC Radio 3's Jazz on 3 programme and went on air during February 2015 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the release of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme.
Rowland has also composed and arranged for the Fidelio Trio, Jazz Warriors Orchestra, world/jazz saxophonist Ray Carless, African master percussionist Pops Mohamed, vibes player Orphy Robinson, Indian group Shiva Nova and jazz trumpeter Byron Wallen.
As a bandleader, Rowland also composes for his jazz bands including his jazz sextet, the Brazilian influenced Mistura, Caribbean Nu Jazz outfit Creative Force which features Orphy Robinson on vibes, the Mediterranean quintet In Kimbe, with Sardinian vocalist Filomena Campus and the experimental/free improv trio Myrtle, with Alwynne Pritchard voice and Thorolf Thuestad on computer.
Rowland has also had his music performed by many ensembles and artists including the American jazz flautist Ali Ryerson, jazz bass clarinet star David Jean-Baptiste and the Trinity College of Music Contemporary Jazz Ensemble among others.
Rowland studied flute at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama mainly with Kathryn Lukas as well as Philippa Davies, Peter Lloyd and participated in master classes given by the late Geoffrey Gilbert. He studied jazz with the late pianist Lionel Grigson. He regularly performs on flute in new music ensembles, jazz groups, various non Western groups, symphony orchestras, pop outfits and as a soloist.
