COWBOY HAT AND THAT FUZZBOX VOODOO are an English band formed in West London in May 2012. They combine intelligent lyrics with Electronic music, Blues Rock and Alt. Country to create a unique mix of experimental, fired up, retro and contemporary Americana based music. They released their debut album ‘A History of The American West and Other Stories’ last year and their new album ‘American Cities’ is due for release on 1st April 2015.
After 30 years, Nigel Barker is back as Cowboy Hat and That Fuzzbox Voodoo. Barker has been in and out of the music industry for 35 years. At 19 he got his first record deal and soon after became a recording engineer, working for artists such as Elton John, Japan and Tears For Fears. But Barker lost the use of his left hand after a near-fatal car accident while working at Air Montserrat in the West Indies in 1981. Unable to play, he found at 23 years old, his musical career was over.
In the intervening years he pursued a successful career as an editor, movie screenwriter, and director but that really didn’t satisfy his creative needs in the same way that music did until, after 14 years of riding a Harley Davidson with a heavy clutch, Barker noticed some feeling and movement returning to his left hand. After 30 years, he picked up a guitar again. He is now re-inventing his career. A career that was taken away from him at the age of 23.
One of the first things he did was to go out and buy the very same guitar he had when he was 19 (a cherry sunburst Gibson Les Paul) and spent hours on mammoth practice sessions, getting the three fingers that were now working again, strong enough to play.
He began writing songs for an album soon after, formed a backing band of seasoned musicians and Cowboy Hat was born. Live audiences have compared Cowboy Hat to Leonard Cohen, Eels and Jack White’s Raconteurs, and Barker’s lyrics have been described as “breathtakingly inventive”. The music is, raw, rich and full of power. The debut album is a broad genre crossover, ranging from the old school Country of “I Love The South”, to the simple acoustic lament of “The Cherokee Trail of Tears”. There’s the epic “Custer” and the cautiously optimistic “, America”. The vocals and lyrical content are the backbone of these fantastic releases.
PRESS ‘A History of the American West and Other Stories’
These eleven stirring tracks are like a musical history book, each chapter driven along by atmospheric blues rock. The lyrical content is lucid and informative. Big stories, told in epic style. Wyatt Earp, The Alamo, Custer’s Last Stand, the Cherokee Trail of Tears. It’s all here, a great idea, a laudable musical history primer masterminded by a man of vision and determination.
