Ms. Lawrence was born and raised in Harlem, New York. She turned professional singing R&B when she was 15. She gain a lot of recognition when she entered many local talent competitions. She free-lanced and sang with many top and local bands. She has appeared on Broadway and periodically worked a a pit singer for many famous Broadway shows. She would get calls doing background singing work for Ms. Julie Budd, Weldon Irvine, Nina Simone, Arthur Prysock and J.J. Jackson.
In the early 80's Kym decided to change her vocal style by doing the jazz standards and wanted to build her blues repertiore with the help of Jimmy Sigler who worked Dinah Washington for many years as her Music Director and was known to be one of New York's was a top producer/songwriter while working with Patti Labelle, The Spinners, and Phyllis Hyman for Philidelphia International Records.
She has traveled abroad and the United States many times working with top jazz icons to name a few: Nina Simone, Arthur Prysock, Fred Staton, Bernard "Petty" Purdie, Bill Sims Jr., Peck Morrison, Leon Dorsey, Earl May, James Weidman, and Keith Copeland.
