It’s an odd description of the band’s genre, and one that is added to quite regularly by it’s members. Whatever adjectives they might use to describe themselves, Idaho based band The Reptilians have forged their name into the annals of northwest rock and metal. Often compared to bands such as Mastodon, Opeth, Isis, and other modern metal heavyweights, the band has received acclaim from across the globe for both it’s recorded work and live performance.
The Reptilians was formed in 2003 by frontman/guitarist Viktor Wilt and drummer Steve McMichael. The two had performed together since 1997 in a band they formed in high school, Dr. Seuss is Dead. Originally intended to be a side project, as the number of compositions under The Reptilians name began to rapidly increase in the early 2000s the two eventually shifted toward making the new band their primary focus.
Throughout the following decade The Reptilians released multiple albums and solidified their lineup with legendary Idaho guitar virtuoso Joey Labato taking up the lead guitar position alongside the thunderous bass rumblings of bass maestro Stevie Sheiza. Their 2010 concept album “The Mentalist“ received critical acclaim in the metal underground upon it’s release and continues to find the band new fans worldwide to this day, available as a free download with complete art package at the band’s official website.
In June of 2012 the band released a new single, “BRITNEY SPEARS SEX RIOT!“ in conjunction with the launch of their weekly podcast, “JENKPOD“. As with all of their previous projects both the new single and podcast were made available to the public free of charge. They released their most recent single, “Inspirational” in March of 2013. The track appears on the band’s new album “The Breakers“, which was released on June 1, 2013 worldwide.
The band parted ways with bassist Stevie Sheiza in early 2014, and welcomed longtime friend and collaborator Nick McGarvey into the fold to fill the bass position. McGarvey’s previous work with Priapism, Initial Point, Zombunist, Psychedelic Sex Organ, and Obscured By The Sun as a guitarist, bassist, and drummer leave no doubt that the sky is now the limit with regard to the future.
In addition to regularly performing throughout the northwest, The Reptilians are currently writing the follow up to The Breakers, to be recorded in 2014 at The Aedicule Studio.
Outside of The Reptilians, the members continue their efforts and contributions in Dr. Seuss is Dead, BoSoGa, Zombunist, Psychelic Sex Organ, and The Unread, as well as the ongoing operation of Spacnum Records, The Aedicule Studio, and the Spacnum Records Podcast, “JENKPOD”.
