Trumpet and Flugelhorn player Matt Lavelle (1970), is a key member of the downtown music community in NYC.
He began his music career with Hildred Humphries, a swing era veteran who played with Count Basie and Billie Holiday. Playing Jazz in NYC since 1993, Lavelle has toured in Europe 6 times to date. He began to study with jazz legend Ornette Coleman in 2005 which had a huge impact and transformational impact on him which resulted in the addition of the Alto Clarinet as another voice to his collection.
Lavelle also was recently key in the resurgence and recording of Jazz man Giuseppi Logan, an underground legend of the ‘60's missing for over 30 years. With over 15 appearances as a sideman on record, Lavelle has released four records as a leader: Handling the Moment (2002), Trumpet Rising, Bass Clarinet Moon (2004), Spiritual Power (2006), and Manifestation Drama (2009). Lavelle released Goodbye New York, Hello World (2011) and his first book New York City Subway Drama and Beyond, was also published in 2011.
Matt Lavelle has played and collaborated with Ornette Coleman, William Parker, Warren Smith, Henry Grimes, Eric Mingus, Sabir Mateen, Roy Campbell, Daniel Carter, Jemeel Moondoc, Mat Maneri, Ras Moshe, Hilliard Greene, Steve Swell, Matana Roberts, Bern Nix, Charles Downs and William Hooker.
In 2012 Lavelle will be featured on ESP records and also on several releases for Unseen Rain. In the spring of 2013, Lavelle plans to release his "12 Houses" project on KMB records, while continuing to record for Unseen Rain. Matt Lavelle remains an important generational link on trumpet.
