RetroRockerz is the rock sound you heard in the 70's, 80's and 90's, with some blues thrown in to stimulate the pleasure centre of the soul. To that, add a few red dirt and classic country tunes to the mix and you have the RetroRockerz on stage. You'll get the same show for 10 people as you would for a 1,000. The RetroRockerz are appreciated for their strong vocals, the ability to nail cover songs they perform, to changing the style a bit to make it their own, down to the originals written by the band. "It's all about playing the good timeless music and having fun."
RetroRockerz are a three piece band from Northeast OK/Southeast KS, that have been playing together for eight years. Collectively they have many years of music history, together and with other groups. Doug Mellen(drums & lead vocals) growing up in a musical family of country music, was destined to be a part of the music scene. He was raised in Caney KS, but has made Independence KS his home. Doug is a family man, husband, father of eight and supervisor at Hackney in Independence. Paul Murphy(guitar & lead vocals) being inspired by the vinyl records of the 60's his siblings listened to, started playing guitar at the age of 8 years old. Paul was born and raised in Caney Ks, and works in maintenance at Four County Mental Health Center in Independence, Ks. He set his roots down in Havana KS, with wife and raised 4 children, now grown, with families of their own. Tom Foreman(bass) musical interest came about on the day he watched The Beatles perform on the Ed Sullivan show. He was raised in Copan OK, where he still lives with his wife and daughter. Tom is a medical doctor at the Northeastern Tribal Health Clinic in Miami OK. So you see, their history shows they are a dedicated trio, to their families, to the band and to the music they grew up listening to…that is the variety of music you will hear them playing.
In addition to performing at local venues and special events, the guys have acquired regular bookings at Downstream Casino in Joplin, Ramona Cherokee Casino, the Osage Casinos in northeastern Oklahoma, and at one of the areas hotspot in Caney, KS, Short Creek. While performing at the 2 Sisters Pub in Bartlesville OK, they had the privilege to share the mic with Tulsa radio personality Lynn Hernandez from KMOD. After hearing the RetroRockerz perform, Lynn said, “they are as good as any band in Tulsa and better than most…. good solid sound and great vocals.” The RetroRockerz are also a regular act at the well known Neewollah Festival in Independence, KS, an event that draws thousands every year.
The RetroRockerz also take time to perform at benefits and fundraisers. Besides playing numerous local benefits, they had the honor to participate in the 2011 Musicians For Miracles Concert, raising money for the Childrens Miracle Network held in Joplin, MO. In 2007 they took the stage for The United Way's "Rockin' Docs Battle of the Bands" fundraiser held at Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa. A bonus for the RetroRockerz, was taking 1st place, being judged by well known Oklahoma Jazz artist Earl Clark, along with one of Oklahomas most notable guitarist Mac Ross, and Lori Fullbright, anchor personality & crime reporter for KOTV in Tulsa.
