Michael Guilford / Bio

Michael Guilford, Bass, Tuba, Composer and Educator. From Youngstown, Ohio. Graduated with honors from Ohio Univ. 1972. Taught History of Jazz at Ohio U. Won National Endowment Grant in composition in 1973. Artist in Residence at Syracuse Univ. 1073. Lived in North Africa and Europe 1972-82. Toured with Pony Poindexter, spent 2 years with Nina Simone and 3 years with Randy Weston. Freelanced playing bass and Tuba and worked with Speed of Light Ensemble. Returned to U.S. in 1982 to NYC metro area freelancing on bass and playing Tuba in Charli Persip's Supersound band where i am celebrating 20 years as a member after re-joining in 1995. Released Street Beat Suite in 1995 cassette of original compositions, followed by Space Spyze Anthology in 2001 and Jazz at Tuba Shop in 2005 a Cd that features the Tuba as the primary solo instrument. All original compositions.In 2002 did some educational workshops and concerts with Cellist Karen Patterson. Became involved in the Word in Jazz church service for 5 years until 2012 in the Bronx . Freelance and also work with my band Space Spyze which has included Pianist Donald Smith, Drummer Greg Bandy and Guitarist Marvin Horne or Michael Howell. Have had occasional concerts with The Sabir Mateen ensembles and continue to freelance. With the passing of bassist Erl May, I may be the last Left-handed bassist in the NYC area. Presently working to complete a new Cd.
