George Stevens' Racket / Bio

I have been playing music since the age of about 14. Primarily self taught, I have embraced many different genres of music and over approximately 30 years have played everything from heavy rock to jazz, early music, reggae, traditional folk and world music on numerous instruments. I play mostly by ear and in an improvisatory way.

My core skills are percussion (djembe, congas, darabouka, bodhran), rhythm bouzouki, English/Flemish bagpipes, electric bagpipes. Other instruments include guitar, bass, octave mandola, lute, gittern and lap harp.

Previous bands/recording collaborations include Tangle Brothers, Belerion, Silver Ghost Band, Sax Berlin, Late For Breakfast, Supa Reuben's Allstars, Geoff Hills, Al Jones, Snaketown.

While musical versatility and adaptability are also strengths that have been learnt by years of 'paying dues', I am what's loosely termed 'a folky' at heart and my solo compositions and personal style of playing reflect and draw upon traditional music from East to Western Europe and show influences of all the other genres mentioned above.

I have an EP '3 Tunes' currently available as a cd or downloads via my website.
New release Autumn 2012 'A Toad in the Hand' is now available to buy as cd from my website www.gstevensluthier.co.uk, Fishrecords.co.uk, cdbaby.com...or as downloads from all the usual sites, iTunes etc.
12 tracks of my own composition featuring bouzouki, border pipes, guitars, violin, hurdy gurdy, acoustic bass, various percussion etc. ...with influences from the traditional music of Britain, France, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
I am currently promoting this and more new compositions with my band Stevens' Racket....
Christine, the other current 'Racket' member, on fiddle / accordion is also a very experienced player and music teacher ...together we notch up more years of experience as musicians than I care to mention!!

Most recently I have been working on an extensive collection of original pipe tunes/arrangements for a publisher who was suitabley impressed, I am happy to say, by the 'Toad' album. It's been a lot of work over most of this year but around 20 tracks are now just about done (30/10/2013). The majority of this is largely influenced by European music styles and created using fully electric bagpipes.
