New York-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Kervin is telling a story. With a unique sound and inspired writing, her blend of modern and classic influences “takes you to the place where your heart is smiling” (MuzikReviews).
From five-year-old concerts in her living room in Atlanta, GA singing songs about a gerbil named Gus, Sarah has always been precociously pushing the boundaries of creativity. After picking up piano and saxophone, she began a long musical love affair with jazz when she first heard the sweet sounds of the classic album Sonny Side Up. “After listening to Dizzy [Gillespie] sing 'Sunny Side of the Street' I was hooked. Those rhythms - those rhythms!! - and that raw, fearless sound - I knew that I had to learn how to speak that language.”
After graduating with a jazz degree in saxophone & voice from the University of South Carolina and a master’s degree in jazz voice from the acclaimed University of North Texas, Sarah focused on her own artistic expression and released her first solo album, Passing Through, in May 2012. The collection of original works and innovative arrangements captures the twists and turns we all face on our journey through life. “ …it's amazing to see how much the words and the music have changed as I've developed as an artist and a person. I think this whole album represents a kind of conclusion I've reached in my life and my music – up to this point anyway. I’m excited to keep moving forward. My story’s not done yet!”
As an artist, Sarah has received recognition as a soloist, guest artist, composer, and bandleader throughout the nation. She has received six DownBeat Student Music Awards, the Jazz Education Network Composition Award, and research grants in vocal pedagogy from the Magellan Program. Sarah has performed with great artists such as Jon Hendricks, the Manhattan Transfer, Ben Folds, the Fort Worth Symphony, and Afro Blue. Sarah has also been featured as a guest artist with the Texas Instruments Jazz Band, the Dick Goodwin Jazz Orchestra, and the Columbia City Jazz Orchestra, and she has performed as part of the South Carolina, Denton, TX, and Frisco, TX Jazz Festivals and the 2008 Olympic Pre-Game Ceremonies.
Sarah Kervin is currently telling her story in Brooklyn, NY.
