Jenn Rogar / Bio

Jenn Rogar is an exceptional singer/songwriter with a voice no one will soon forget. Her second CD, "Shasta is soon to be released and is produced by Sacramento's legendary performer/engineer David Houston and Sacramento's legendary guitarist Mike Farrell. This CD is a beautiful collaboration between all of these very talented artists. Jenn's debut CD "Place Called Humanity" was released 2008. Jenn Rogar grew up along the American river in Auburn, California in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Jenn spent many early mornings and afternoons riding her horse along the American River and in the oaks and pines behind her family's small ranchhouse. Her family raised a few cows, chickens and of course dogs, cats and "Leroy" the pet goat. Many afternoons were spent riding trails and observing and listening to the sounds of nature which would naturally influence her music later. Jenn began playing the guitar in 1997 and was also influenced by that year's extraordinary environmental activism of Julia Butterfly Hill, Darryl Cherney,Judi Bari and others during Redwood Summer as well as the Free Mumia! Campaign supported by singer/songwriter Diane Patterson and others. Jenn's humanitarian sensibilities were awakened by these indidivuals as well as her study of history at UC Davis and subsequent earning of a teaching degree in Social Studies at Sacramento State. Jenn also earned a law degree in 2004 from Lincoln Law school of Sacramento. Jenn has been a public school teacher teaching primarily Social Studies for the last 17 years. The first few years of songwriting for Jenn produced songs that are considered topical regarding subjects such as the environnment, the death penalty, Indigenous people, children's rights and promoting peace. If Jenn wasn't writing the songs, she was singing songs written or interpreted by others such as Diane Patterson, Joanne Rand, Alice DiMicele, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Utah Phillips, Holly Near, Pete Seeger, Buffy Saint Marie, Kate Wolf, and Woody Guthrie, just to name a few. Jenn's songs pair together poetic words with a soothing voice described as "having a naturalness" which creates music almost always described as relaxing. Jenn has performed in many places since 1997 including coffee houses, restaurants, clubs, fairs, festivals, rallies, benefits and fundraisers. Jenn has sang at events benefitting survivors of domestic violence to victims of homelessness and the nuclear holocaust, as well as peace rallies and the campaign to free Bradley Manning. If it's a timely and just cause, Jenn tries to be there. Jenn has most recently teamed up with the extremely talented guitarist Steve McLane and bassist Ken Rabiroff and has been performing with Percussionist Eric Everett for the last few years.Jenn has also appeared on cable channel 17 "Listen Up! Sacramento" and at the KVMR studio's in Nevada City with radio hosts Peggy Bean and Che Greenwood. A most unusual show was in the summer of 2011, Jenn performed on a big flat rock next to the South Yuba River, Nevada city at the Pleasant Revolutionaries' Shrimp Fest" with performers who travel the country by bike and perform without amplification. The amplification was human powered with bicycles! Jenn's debut CD is currently available and her new CD "Shasta" will be available soon on CD Baby and in area record stores, on i-tunes and at her shows. You can also order a CD direct from Jenn by sending an email to jennrogar@yahoo.com or leaving a message here on reverbnation. Jenn is setting up a website www.jennrogar.com that will coincide with the release of the new CD. An album will be released in January of 2014. Songs on the new CD explore self-dignity, love, loss, the struggle of addiction, the power of faith and a few songs are just plain meaningless fun. The result is groovy and hip folk and blues and a bit of country. One of the songs on the new cd is the song "Torah" and is about the Israeli/Palestinian "conflict" and the humanitiarian crisis in Gaza and has so far been well received by listeners, but will undoubtedly prove to be controversial. Other songs include the title track "Shasta" about the beautiful Mount Shasta, one of the greatest spiritual vortex's in the world. "The Rememered Earth" is a song about the mother earth and our responsibility to be better caretakers and socially conscious consumers. It calls ffor the direct boycott of major corporations that do harm to people, animals and the environment. Jenn has always said in regards to performing "it's not about me", but rather intended to be a communal sharing of music, passion, humor and love with her audiences with the objective of helping to build a more peaceful and healthy planet.. Like so many other peace and love advocates out there who have influenced Jenn, Jenn seeks to be part of the Movement. And like John' Lennon's songs says, Jenn knows she's not the only one...
