Gypsy Devil has been graciously winning the hearts of the locals for a little less than a year, but the prodigious group of young men and their neo-southern rock sound have been building a buzz in the Dallas scene. With their gut pounding drum beats, their pulsating bass, soul capturing riffs and haunting vocals, Gypsy Devil will leave you mesmerized with their limitless talent.
The band started in early 2012 when singer/songwriter and lead guitarist Russell Willard re-united with bassist/backup vocalist Ben Kirkland, who served 6 years in the Army being stationed in places such as Iraq and Korea as a Blackhawk helicopter mechanic, crew chief and door gunner. Fueled by a mutual interest and respect for music, the two began recording original material such as "I Know" and "Outlaw Born". 'Russell and I started playing at the same time and grew together as musicians and best friends, so we have always meshed well with each other' says Ben. 'Ben is very creative and he has vision, we have the same vision.' explains Russell.
The band was later joined by drummer Caleb Hunter, who spiced up the mix with both his old school sound and his ability to play without reservation. 'He beats the hell out of that drum set.' says Russell. Inspired by life stories involving sex, drugs and alcohol, this group has lived their music; every song is fresh and will captivate your spirit.
As stoked as they were with the new sounds they were laying down, the band never anticipated the enthusiasm which critics and fans alike have found for their music. Chris Burney, Lead Guitarist/Backing vocals for the Texas native band Bowling for Soup has said that Russell's style "sounds like Kurt Cobain if he listened to Tom Waits instead of The Pixies. It's very Three Bar Blues, very Buddy Holly." Fans all over Dallas agree that with their incredibly addictive melodies, Gypsy Devil should have to register with the FDA as a stimulant that should be available by prescription ONLY!
Gypsy Devil is committed to the goal of dominating the local Dallas scene, taking over Texas, and eventually world domination while continuing to build their already impeccable musical capabilities and perfect them more with each song, album, and show that they execute. Ultimately Gypsy Devil is looking forward to pursuing their dreams of being adored by fans all over the country.
'This is more than just a hobby for us,' says Ben, 'We want this more than anything.' Russell proclaims, 'I love music, I love to write, it's the only thing I'm good at! I just want other people to love our music too.' Fans are always left screaming for more when Gypsy Devil leaves the stage.
