Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama Lauren “Sassy” Brown has been singing since as long as she can remember. From a little girl putting on concerts in her parents’ living room to stages in Nashville, Tennessee – singing and performing have always been a part of her life. Throughout her school days, Lauren participated in various show choirs, musical theater and toured the Southeast for 2 years in a 12 member a cappella ensemble – singing alongside none other than the “Velvet Teddy Bear”: Ruben Studdard.
In the early 2000’s, Lauren moved to Nashville, Tennessee. There she worked with various bands – singing country and rock. The “blues bug” bit her after sitting in for a set with Stacy Mitchhart at Bourbon Street Blues Bar – and the rest, as they say, is history! Lauren discovered that she had a deep passion for the blues groove and lyrics – and with influences such as Bonnie Raitt, Koko Taylor and Etta James - her distinctive vocal growl emerged and Sassy Brown had found her home in the blues.
Making her way back home to Alabama in 2011, Lauren found that Birmingham was a Mecca for outstanding musicians and formed a powerhouse band in March 2012. One of the definitions of Sassy is lively and high-spirited - which certainly describes the foot tapping, dance-able beat of her band. While Sassy is working the room on vocals, Glen Butts is smoking on lead guitar, Scott Housey is keeping it funky on bass and John Oliver is holding down the killer beat on drums.
When asked why she sings the blues, Lauren said “The blues make me happy. And no, that doesn't mean being sad and blue makes me happy! The blues aren't all about sadness. Blues is about happiness AND sadness - love, lust, passion, anger, heartache. That’s life, baby. And THAT makes me happy!”
