I'm no Simon Cowell product, Disney protogee, Brit school alumna or any kind of reality TV star! I'm just a guy that had to live a bit before I could write real songs and find my voice. What drives me most is a burning desire to write pop songs, to express myself, to sing and live with no regrets.
After I finished my degree at art school in 2005 I moved in with a friend with recording and performing experience. I picked up the guitar for the first time and started writing songs. Thanks to Ivor at the Job Centre, I got onto the New Deal for musicians scheme. This led me to win a bursary place onto a vocal performance course with the Montgomery Holloway Music Trust. I performed in concert with and had training from Laurie Holloway (former musical director for Strictly Come Dancing and The Parkinson show) and popular Jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth. They praised and encouraged my vocal ability and tone.
I have been developing and experimenting with my sound and direction, working with a number of different musical outfits and producers. However, the songs and their essence have been with me from the beginning, ever changing in their different guises and interpretations, waiting for the right time to solidify in their form. They represent the very pinnacle and amalgam of everything I've ever been trying to communicate as an artist.
In a culture over saturated with media, image and style over substance, I introduce, in the purest sense, my songs and my vibe. A fusion of folk, pop and electro with fond references to old skool, accessible, DIY, raw POP! It comes direct from the heart and from humble origin yet dressed up with theatricality and some tongue in cheek nuances. In every way this is the backdrop to my take on life. So here I am, Somewhere in the Drama! I do hope they move you, and you relate to them in some way. Thank you for reading, Harry Toogood x
