Lauren Gray ready to take on “life after Idol”
By Mack Sheen
After gaining worldwide attention as a fan favorite on American Idol, and being proclaimed “the best singer we’ve heard to date” by Jennifer Lopez (not to mention making her cry), one might think that Lauren Gray would have a clear cut road ahead of her to stardom. “I only wish it were that easy” Lauren says with her always present smile. She adds, “Life is not always as you think it is, and sometimes full of incredibly difficult choices”.
After being cut in the top 42, American Idol producers considered it a fore gone conclusion that Gray would be back to compete for the next season. However, in her downtime, she began collaborating and recording demos with veteran producer Doug Deforest in his Cherokee Village studio, Lake Paradise Studio, just five minutes from her home. Doug, along with Lauren’s father, veteran blues musician Mike Gray, began crafting a sound on Lauren that would seem to completely change what most had considered blue eyed soul up to now.
“Lauren sings from the inside of her toes” Deforest says. “Nothing she does is like any other singer I’ve ever seen before. People ask me how I produce Lauren, and I just laugh. You don’t produce talent like that. You just write and record the songs and hit record on the vocal. Her voice does the rest”.
Tied up in a contract with 19 entertainment, the producers of Idol, until recently created yet another challenge. The world would have to wait until late August to even get their first taste of Lauren’s music. As Deforest puts it, “the challenge was not running to the tallest mountain with a megaphone and telling the world what a talent you have in your studio”. He adds “Waiting was the hardest thing to do”.
Now, the waiting is over. In the next couple of months, several tracks will be posted to Lauren Gray’s reverbnation page and will soon be available at most digital outlets. Gray trended number one on yahoo in her days on idol, which should only add to the appeal and success of her music. Though touring nationally is in the cards, time is still needed to match this amazing voice to equally amazing songs. Working with songwriters such as Deforest, her father Mike, Marlon Mundy (who sings a fantastic duet with Lauren) and Carlos “Los” Fransisco, Along with her childhood friend A.K. Barnes,Lauren’s sound is only set to sky rocket onward and upward!
