Zack Cross is a 2010 graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with his BM in Jazz Piano Performance. During his time at IU, he was selected to participate in the Steans Institute for Young Artists in Jazz at the Ravinia Festival outside of Chicago, IL, where he studied with jazz legends Rufus Reid, James Moody, David Baker, and Nathan Davis.
Zack has studied and played with some of the most revered names in modern jazz, including Jerry Bergonzi, Marc Mommas, Vic Juris, Darius Brubeck, Michael Spiro, Randy Brecker, Jim Snidero, Steve Houghton, Mark Buselli, David Baker, Robert Irving III, Brent Wallarab, and Rob Dixon. He was subsequently nominated for the American Pianists Association’s Cole Porter Jazz Fellowship, currently the most prestigious award for jazz piano in the world. In July 2010, he helped organize a fundraiser for Haitian musicians, where he performed and raised over a thousand dollars. In January 2011, the Zack Cross Trio recorded its first LP, entitled “Up/Under.” Since then, he has been performing with the fusion band Unfulfilled Desires, with whom he has performed at the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, Charlie Wright’s International in London, England, and the EnlightenNext Renaissance Festival.
In August 2011, Zack participated in the Hudson Jazz Works, in Hudson, NY. There he worked with an internationally selected group of musicians to study the art of duo and trio playing. The workshop was led by Armen Donelian and Marc Mommas.
Zack’s musical interests include other genres as well. He currently performs with the country-rock band Jamie Kent and the Options, with whom he is on the road more than 250 days a year. He is also the pianist for the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Great Barrington, MA. Zack lent his talents on the accordion to a Berkshire Theatre Festival production of Bobby Houston’s Viva la Diva. He is currently employed by the Rudolf Steiner School in Great Barrington, MA where he is the accompanist for Eurythmy classes.
