Blues/Rock’s Newest Guitar Man: Rett Smith
“I Swear” is the first single released by up and coming guitarist and songwriter, Rett Smith. Hailing from the West, transplanted in New York City, Smith’s music brings the warmth of soul and blues rock to the heart of the wintry streets. “I Swear” is a low lying testament to Smith’s classic rock influenced guitar playing: with leads layered over a lyrical threat, “I went inside and I grabbed my gun, smiled as I watched you two run.”
The single conjures the sound of The Wallflowers, with a heavier tinge of country and “Hey, Joe” storytelling whose authenticity defies Smith’s years. “The most important thing to me is that my words trigger an emotion…first in me and then the audience,” says Smith of his songwriting. “I know what the songs were about to me when I wrote them and the underlying struggle or loss that carries me every time I hear them but I don’t expect everyone to feel the same way I do. I try to to write in a way that tells a story anyone can make their own.”
Rett Smith’s upcoming album, “One to Blame,” will be released mid-2014, and is produced by 9 time Grammy award-winning Joe Nicolo, whose work with names like The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan lends a degree of notoriety to any newcomer he chooses to work with. With a producer like Nicolo, we can only imagine what the rest of the album will sound like. Smith is currently planning a 2014 tour in support of the album, and “I Swear” is available for free download on SoundCloud.
What to do ’til the album’s release? Kick those boots off, grab a bottle of bourbon, and enjoy the tunes. We promise you’ll wake up in a warmer climate- at least, your ears will.
