My name is Derek Fiechter and I have a passion to compose music that's both unique and awe-inspiring. As a Christian, my hope is to use my music to glorify Jesus. My specialty is in creating songs that have a distinct melody that people can sing or hum. I've been composing music for over ten years now, but there's still so much to know. Over the years, I've found out that it's not so much composing music as it is listening to different music. Just like an expert writer needs to be read many types of books, so a musical composer needs to listen to many different styles of music.
This is what I try to do. I try to listen to anything from Celtic, to Japanese pop, to Instrumental, to New Age, to Ambient, to Middle Eastern music. The more I hear these songs, the more I can begin to pick up on the different ways the songs are created and what makes each style unique.
As a side note, because of my ear for music, I've learned how to play a lot of film music on the piano by watching movies and Youtube clips. The "He's a Pirate", from Pirates of the Caribbean is one of my particular favorites. It almost gets old how many times my friends ask me to play that particular piece on the piano. Still, I enjoy it, so I almost always oblige their request--even if I'm playing for a wedding reception. As of yet, no one seems to mind.
