Stephen And the Hawkings / Bio

We rock out to the rhythms of the universe.
Stephen and the Hawkings is a band from Frederick, MD that plays an eclectic, slightly nerdy brand of indie rock with an emphasis on strong, memorable melodies. But what does that mean?

Squealing guitar riffs? Check. Vocal harmonies? Check. Introspective lyrics? Check. Intricate bass lines? Check. A song about Lord of the Rings? Check. (Hey, it worked for Led Zeppelin). Toss in classic jazz staples, a video game theme song, and a cover of a popular sci-fi TV show theme, and you'll start to understand that the band's style is as expansive as its members' imaginations.

The current lineup is Justin Eisenstadt, Mark Eisenstadt, Sean Holmes, and Derek Schaible. The band has performed in venues in Frederick, Baltimore, DC, and northern Virginia. In 2013, Stephen and the Hawkings composed and performed an original score for Lean and Hungry Theater's radio play adaptation of "Julius Caesar," which was broadcast live on WAMU 88.5 for tens of thousands of radio listeners. Listen to it here:

The majority of the band's songs are originals, written by Justin and Sean. Justin describes his biggest influences as a musician and songwriter as Modest Mouse, The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, and Elliott Smith.
"This is a sophisticated sound that the 25 year old auburn-haired girl and the GQ-dressed thirty-something male would enjoy hearing after 10 p.m. in a high-end DC club."

-Mark Eisenstadt, drummer for Stephen and the Hawkings
