Kentwist aims to spread joy and happiness with his music. “I tune into the atmosphere and mood of a place and select music accordingly.”
A Dutch radio show got him hooked at the age of 12. “I got really fascinated by the amazing sounds that came from the speaker.” That was when he started producing music. He also found inspiration in his dad’s record collection, which consisted of old disco music. When he was 14 he started mixing music on his own mixing table.
Kentwist started playing his music for his friends, and soon he found himself djing at school discos and parties. “Playing music is always a compromise: you want to play music you like, but you also have to play music the crowd likes, so you have to compromise.” That is what Kentwis likes: to give new music to the crowds. “Many people listen to commercial music, and I don’t really like it,” he says. “A dj’s job is to give something new to the audience, something they have not heard before.” That is his mission, to give the listener a new experience. An experience that he hopes inspires the listener and evokes new thoughts.
He is into new and old music, the most important is that it´s real music that has been produced the proper way, and not just programmed. He therefore finds inspiration in old records. However, he doesn’t like to define himself to one type of music or one favorite performer: he really likes variety: electronica, disco, house, but the key word is funky music, to make people dance!
