Andre Jones (born April 28, 1988), better known by his stage name Chicken, is an inspiring rapper and songwriter with feeling and influential music. Chicken has been his name since an infant 2 describe his size as a premature child. Andre was parented by a dancer in Marlo Jones and a proud father, Andre Cherry. Andre Jr. was raised on Hill District of Pittsburgh, otherwise known as the roughest part of the city.
But when André was just 4 years of age his mother and newborn sister moved to Atlanta until he was 10 years old. Thru those 6 years he and his brother "Meez" stayed close 2 each other and did everything together. Although they're mother was no longer physically there the music she instilled in the pair was always being showcased. But just like any urban black family they struggled to make ends meet and keep a roof to lay under. These times are what drove Jones to seek better and break the cycle his family was in. So in school he was a part of the basketball team, chorus, all city band, the drama team and he also took up Shakespeare opera plays. All of this makes up Jones' content and originality today.
As a child Marlo would prepare Andre and his brother Jeremy (Meez) Cherry for various talent shows and other public speaking. Andre was also influenced by his cousin, an inspiring songwriter and producer at the time, Melvin (Mel Man) as he lived in the same household with his immediate family. The biggest musical influence in Andre’s life so far would have to be when he moved with his mother to Atlanta, Georgia at age 12. Georgia is where Andre learned about rhythm living in Dekalb County and attending Lovejoy and Morrow High Schools. As Andre got older he felt that he had to return to his roots to find himself. At that time is when he started releasing mix cd’s with Dejuan Blair and his brother Meez at Schenley High School. Once he realized how to use the mixture of his Atlanta upbringings with his original Pittsburgh flavor is when his music was never the same.
Once he felt the reaction and energy of the public and how they accepted him he knew music was his passion. Therefore Andre kept writing and performing locally and nationally putting his city on. His first cd with the P.O.P. Stamp was the “Back At It” mixtape with his brother Meez hosted by Dejuan Blair in March 2009. As expected the duo received a lot of love and attention from all ears they came across. Release in October of 2010 was “Back At It Again” the second official mixtape the two collaborated
He chooses to take everyday topics that most may be embarrassed about and makes entertainment out of it. "it's all about the feeling!" Jones says. He insists on making music that creates a feeling and there is no better feeling than making others feel good. So whether you are smiling or having a down day, "Chicken" is guaranteed to catch your attention and ride with you throughout your life journey. His song range creativity is so wide that he doesn't know what genre he is, what category he fits in. He just likes to say "it (music) comes from the heart.
On Christmas day of 2011, Chicken released his first solo project entitled, Call Me D Nice, which is an all old school mixtape, and features the hit singles Freaky Tales, Skipping Record, among many others. Back in the studio and constantly working, Chicken just released his 2nd solo mixtape, entitled April’s Fool and on April 28th, Chicken released yet another project entitled “HEEEYYY”, named after his signature catch-phrase. After the release of these two highly anticipated mixtapes, it will be certain that Chicken is the hottest artist in Pittsburgh, excluding no one.
