Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, John Devin Bates started his music career at age 13. He began playing piano in church and continues to play in church. Coming from a musical family, John developed his music skills and foundation under his mother. John began to expand his thinking and broaden his concepts. In 1986 enrolled in the Fairview Studios and received formal training and began to learn theory and how music is shaped. John started listening to Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson and different artists and musicians to the point where he has implemented various styles. In 1989, John attended Youngstown State University where he studied music education at the Dana School of Music. John returned to Indianapolis in the spring 1990. John began for a brief period to study with Professor Martin Marks of Butler University. John in the fall of 1997 moved to Texas where he served in numerous capacities as musician, clinician, administrator in the areas of fine arts. John has played for Church Of God In Christ Inc., from local to state levels. John continues to work on his craft as a musician. Some of his influences are Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, David Benoit, Alex Bugnon, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Meddy Gerville, George Duke, and the list goes on. In 2012 John released his piano instrumental single "Seasons" plus his bonus track "Seasons Interlude". The complete CD project is expected for release soon.
