Merican Slang / Bio

Inspired by Dictionary of American Slang, Merican Slang, Albuquerque’s premier funk band, was established in April, 2011. Merican Slang is often described as experimental and unique; “Merican Slang’s music has been likened to the JBs and the Meters” (Local IQ Magazine). Merican Slang attracts a regional fan base which loves to dance and party until last call! “They’re a booty poppin’ party band” (Local Alibi).

Merican Slang celebrated the release of its debut album, “Livin’ in Merica,” recorded at Central Root Studios (Albuquerque, NM) to critical acclaim on the 4th of July, 2015, at the world famous Low Spirits Bar & Stage (Albuquerque, NM). The album features guest artists Nick Fury (Fleas Fleece) and Hakim Bellamy (Funky Feeding Frenzy), Albuquerque’s first Poet Laureate! “Livin’ in Merica” is aired on various mainstream media outlets including iHeart Radio and Spotify. Merican Slang’s music is available for purchase at all major online stores (iTunes, Amazon.com, Google Play, etc.) and most on-line streaming music services. University of New Mexico’s public radio station, KUNM (kunm.org), added Merican Slang to its legendary music library in December 2015 and currently has “Livin’ in Merica” on the station’s play list. Merican Slang is an iHeart Radio artist, meaning “Livin’ in Merica” is played by iHeart Radio stations on-line and on the airwaves, worldwide!

Merican Slang performs at the most popular clubs, music festivals and concert venues from Coast to Coast. Notable Merican Slang engagements include opening for Bob Dylan in 2011 at the Hard Rock Pavilion (Albuquerque, NM), performing for a crowd of thousands at the City of Albuquerque’s 2015 Freedom Fourth Concert at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Park Field (Albuquerque, NM), and headlining the 2015 High Mountain Hideout Music and Art Festival (Taos Ski Valley, NM). Merican Slang also shared the stage with national acts Cody ChesnuTT (The Roots, “The Seed, 2.0 ft. Cody ChesnuTT”), Frank Hannon (Tesla), Thompson Square, and Zach Deputy, to name a few! The group’s unique musical arrangements and high energy stage presence elevates the music experience for fans of live music of any genre! When Merican Slang takes the stage, it’s time to dance!

“Fulsomely funky and featuring the alto sax vibrations of Romeo Alonzo, Merican Slang makes music inclusive of a variety of red, white and blue genres, with special attention paid to jazz, hip-hop and southern fried boogie; guitarist/lead vocalist James Haynes partakes in tones that range from ecstatic to enigmatic, while the rhythm section - built from the prodigious talents of drummer Ricardo Sanchez and bassist Dave Pankuch – put a hefty punch into the proceedings.” (August March, Local Alibi)

Merican Slang employs a full-time publicity team committed to implementing successful promotion campaigns in their booked venues’ surrounding areas. Promotions, in cooperation with the venues, may include but are not limited to social media campaigns, posting of bills where allowed, use of street teams, newspaper and on-line advertising, live television and radio station in-studio performances and/or interviews.
