Authentic Sounds of Silverlake
Authentic Sounds of Silverlake is a music group that focuses on presenting esoteric party music from the far corners of the globe. Melodies from Serbia, Ethiopia, Colombia, New Orleans, Mexico, Ohio, Bulgaria, Jamaica and South Africa all come into play during a performance by Authentic Sounds of Silverlake. The group performs with 8 to 10 members that feature a brass section, accordion, percussion, electric guitar, violin and vocals. The band has performed in the Los Angeles area since 2011 with a residency at TAIX restaurant in Echo Park and performed at Peralta Junction Project in Oakland. Authentic Sounds of Silverlake was a part of Malabomba’s lineup for its gypsy music events. The band has catered to wedding receptions and also enjoys performing to the debaucherous crowds of Los Angeles’ dive bars
The members of Authentic Sounds of Silverlake are Southern Californian and have the natural influence of Rock, Jazz and Blues in their blood. The blending of these influences with folk music from distant cultures is part of what has shaped the band’s signature sound. The experience that each member brings to the group is broad. Ravi Carman grew up on Indian music, studied classical music and later lead Los Angeles’s afrobeat band, Fidelity Afrobeat. Andy Ben produced the avant-garde variety show, Steve Allen at Steve Allen, which received critical acclaim by The Los Angeles Times. Masha Petrowizky and Zelda Lin both come from the punk jazz band, Killsonic. Geoff Brandon studied guitar from the greats of Appalachian music and studied Balkan music from the gypsies whenever the roads of traveling musicians crossed. These experiences, along with the enthusiasm for the unknown, and the enjoyment that comes from discovery, meld into what has become the Authentic Sounds of Silverlake.
