The Tail of ZenKali
ZenKali, a band devoted to fun ad positivity, was born from an incident of stalking. Go figure, here’s the story.
One of us was pathetic and in a lonely and in an isolated state. In an attempt to find something better in life than solitude he ventured out into the great unknown of the internet. To one of those sites. You know. One of those sites. There he spied his Nirvana. So he stalked. And he creeped. And he created a persona designed to attract the attentions of the object of his desire, posted it out to the specific world of his infatuation and waited. And waited. And nothing happened. So, losing his cool, he sent a Personal Message. A message, by all expectations, that should have been an Epic Fail. Within this message was perhaps the world’s worst pickup line. I kid you not. The message actually contained the words, “I know the norm is to meet at a Starbucks, or something lame like that, but if you wanna come to my studio I promise not to chop you up into little pieces and spread your parts around Martinez.”
But in classic punk rock fashion, common sense was thrown to the wind and curiosity and a sense of adventure won out. Thus two souls separated from the time they were one year old (a completely different story) found each other and the seed of ZenKali was planted Bill and Sandra.
The only problem was that the fruit born of that seed contained two bass players. One, an ex-road dog and signed professional on his way down and the other an up-and-coming bass goddess playing in one of the fastest rising local bands, Dust, As they were both hopelessly addicted players, (of music, get yer mind out of the gutter) they wanted to band up, but as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, sins in all of music is having two bass players in the same band, they found themselves in The Great Conundrum.
As it turns out, since the has-been is not a total idiot, the solution to The Great Conundrum was really not so hard. The bass goddess would play bass and the has-been would go to the woodshed, put on his safety helmet and be re-born guitarded.
Now a singer was needed. As the bass goddess was also playing in a metal band with a very talented singer, a plan was hatched. Through subterfuge and sneakiness the singer of her band was kidnapped, taken to the delta and buried in a jar with cabbage and chilis like so much kimchee. After much fermentation, promises of artistic freedom and vows of faithfulness and devotion he was finally reborn as the third member of Zenkali Glen Greer.
And so our three intrepid musical adventurers floundered. And floundered. Not for lack of talent though, as their brilliance was undeniable, but for a lack of rhythm. Like a rowed Greek battle ship without a Coxswain to cry, “Stroke!” they found themselves smacking each other and spinning in circles. So like the Greek of olden time they decided to turn to the heavens for help.
Hailing from the land of Turing Machines, complexity theory, and Karnaugh maps came Aaron the drummer. His homeland banished him from uttering a cymbal crash, bass kick or snare crack as his cottage was insufficient to contain them. Looking for things to do, he resorted to nerding out at home many-a-day playing his video games and watching TV. But very quickly grew tired of the nerdling he was and ventured out on a musical adventure. Two weeks later he came across the enticing tunes of ZenKali and thats where the real journey began.
