Gen-Y Jazz is a group made up of some of the most prestigious high school jazz musicians in the state of Colorado playing blues to funk to some of the most famous jazz standards. Two of the members were selected to be in the 2012 Colorado All State Jazz band and one is currently a member of the most competitive drum corps’s in the State, The Blue Knights. The bands bassist is currently a music major at the University of Colorado Boulder. Each have gigged with several groups at numerous venues throughout Denver and Boulder.
Ian Levy, the leader and front line player of the band is currently studying with saxophonist Keith Oxman. This past year he was selected as lead tenor in the 2012 Colorado All State Jazz Band. In the summer of 2011 Ian was selected to play in the world famous Montreux Jazz Festival along with drummer Bobby Fergison with an eight piece traditional jazz band representing the jazz youth of America. Ian has also played weekly as a solo performer at various locations in Denver including Bastien’s Steak House and Royal Gorge Tavern. Currently he plays in the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts in the top jazz combo under the direction of Eric Gunnison.
Bobby Ferguson, the drummer, is an active percussion and drumset player, playing, recording, and educating around Denver. He is a versatile player, gaining experience from many live gigs, and his high school ensembles. As a performer, Bobby has played in the Blue Knights World Percussion Ensemble and the Denver Jazz Club Youth All-Stars. He plays frequently at venues downtown, and travelled to Switzerland in July of 2011 to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
Jake Alvarez, the guitarist, was also selected to play in the 2012 Colorado All State Jazz Band. Jake received an instrumental soloist award at the UNC Greeley Jazz Festival in 2011 and also received a best rhythm section soloist award at the Legacy Jazz Festival in 2010. Jake also has a big band composition premiered August 2nd 2011 at Dazzle. Jake has played with several jazz combos in and out of denver as well as playing with multiple big bands including the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts Big Band along with the Colorado All State Jazz Band. Jake has had the privilage of playing with 20+ CCJA combos over the years since his 8th grade year. Jake has gigged at various venues including the Blue Bird Theater, Dazzle Jazz Club, Blue Note, Mercury Café, and the Governers Mansion.
Bassist, Composer, Teacher, and Tubist. Connor DeFehr is also the bassist for The Midnight Kites, Nonsense in the Woods, The CU basketball band, Tonescape, Tuturu Jazz Orchestra, The Twinberries, and Zac Hicks. He teaches tuba, bass, and beginning guitar and is studying Music Education at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has played at The Gothic Theatre, Mercury Cafe, Cafe Sole, The Laughing Goat, The Mellow Mushroom, The Dnote, Dazzle, The Pumphouse Brewery, The Staples Center, Tonic bar and lounge, Cuvee wine bar, YMCA camp of the Rockies, and Green Lake Conference Center to name a few. He has also played alongside Victor Wooten at one of his Master Classes.
Jordan Rudman, keyboard, has been an active pianist since the third grade when he began accompanying his school choir. He currently plays with the Colorado Conservatory for Jazz Arts, freelance gigs, and has been an accompanist with the Rocky Mountain Children's Choir for the past eight years. In 2010 and 2011 Jordan studied at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, with faculty including Luke Gillespie and Rodney Whitaker and performing with guest artists Ron Blake and Xavier Davis of the Julliard School. He currently studies with Denver pianist and composer Reggie Berg and attends East High School in Denver.
