WoJo has a clear vision of her identity as an artist. “I want to be a singular voice. An important voice. As a songwriter and especially as a singer. I think that tone, groove, diving deep into melody and lyrics and coming up with a sound that is unmistakably WoJo is what I want to achieve. If I can do that then I can reach into any genre and make it mine. I want people to say, “Hey, that’s the new WoJo song” from the first note I sing.”
Her parents came to Canada leaving the economic uncertainty of Poland behind. First in Chicago and then London, Ontario they battled from cleaning, factory and security jobs to support their family. Since settling in the stability of London (two hours west of Toronto) they have found the good life. They have shown endless support for WoJo and her goals in music. The great parental chauffer service running back and forth to Toronto in every weather imaginable as often as three nights a week while WoJo has been co-writing, recording, collaborating and creating herself.
WoJo always had a fiercely competitive spirit, and she found the transition from teenage contest singer to full blown artist a real challenge. “I grew up sort of believing that music was about winning and losing. But in making this record I have found a whole new appreciation for making art”. The making of her record LOVE TESTIFIES was a journey into original song writing (by herself and co-writing with Zack Werner) and into finding her “vibe”. The result is a fusion of soul, disco, R&B, alternative and torch. A new blend from old roots. A bit of Smokey Robinson, a pinch Gladys Knight, a glimpse of Amy Winehouse and all WoJo.
“Honestly, the record took a couple of years from writing with Zack Werner and recording with Tristan Avakian (TransSiberian Orchestra, We Will Rock You) to the amazing sessions with Zack and Mark Camilleri and all the stunning musicians who graced this record. But, the second it was over I wanted it to never end”.
“The song “Believe” has become my theme. The faith that music and love can take you anywhere. But through this album, I have so many other things I wanted to say. Other ideas about life and questions that we all deal with” says WoJo. The album features a who’s who of Canadian virtuosos from Pat Kilbride to Mark and Louise Camilleri to Tony Zorzi, Mark Inneo and Katherine Rose. The playing is stellar and WoJo’s vocals are singular.
Currently slated for release in Canada in spring of 2015, LOVE TESTIFIES truly does testify to the simple truth that WoJo will an artist of true passion and faith in her convictions that music can change everything.
