PAY*OLA are a rock’n’roll 4-piece from Belfast, Northern Ireland – a band with a great affection for the classic rock greats, and who combine those influences with a modern power-pop sensibility to create their own unique sound – one in which the song is important above all else. A combination of melody and bite, humour and passion, suss and soul.
"Optimism Will Destroy Me" is the product of 3 years work, and the follow-up to the hugely well received Try Everything Twice album. The 10-track collection was recorded at Co. Antrim’s Manor Park Studios with producer Neal Calderwood – a long-time Pay*ola collaborator, renowned as one of the finest on the island. The album contains the cream of Pay*ola’s last 2 EP releases, with a clutch of brand new tunes.
The material showcases the full range of the band’s songwriting, from the driving, hook-laden hard rock of Blindside, The Colour Red and The Battle, to the more laid-back and rootsy Hallelujah Town and the power-pop melodicism (often an overlooked aspect of the Pay*ola experience) of O Girl! And Going To Warsaw – itself a tale of Phil & Nick Payola’s New York adventures (despite the misleading title!)
A renowned live act throughout Ireland, and with a growing cult following elsewhere – these boys have rocked stages with acts as diverse as Audioslave, Status Quo, Embrace, Thin Lizzy, Buckcherry, Snow Patrol, Jimmy Barnes and Bad Company. Improve your day with a big piece of Pay*ola!
Here's what Northern ireland's national newspaper The Belfast telegraph had to say about "77 Miles": “If it got nationwide airplay, it would have a good chance of hitting the charts. The title track is a thumping, powerful, chant-along anthem, ideal for singing along to while punching your hand in the air. It would be hailed as a classic if it was released by Van Halen, Aerosmith or Guns’n’Roses”
