SWAN Day is a celebration facilitated by the Fund for Women Artists, a non-profit art service organization which is devoted to help women artists receive the resources that are needed to accomplish their creative endeavors. Over the past decade, this foundation has risen over $4 million and has built a website (http://www.Women/ arts.org) that offers art resources such as, networking, fundraising and advocacy services to over 500,000 visitors a year. This holiday is meant to give recognition to female artists all over the globe by having them come together to support one another. SWAN DAY CT is the only SWAN event in CT and is also one of SWAN day’s most successful events, being named a "Super Swan" event by WomenArts founder Martha Richards . There are hundreds of Swan Day events that happen globally and out of all of them, only 7 have the honor of being guven that title.
SWAN DAY CT’S organizer, Jennifer Hill, front woman of local band Jennifer Hill and Co. (also Hartford Advocate’s Grand Band Slam Best Female Vocalist winner of 2009) has been arranging SWAN Day in CT since 2008 and through Hill’s hard work and devotion to the arts, this day has not only formed a fantastic alliance of creative and artistic women in the east coast region, but has given recognition to female media and empowerment.
Jennifer has also received the attention of WomenArts founder Martha Richards whom she has met with on several occasions to discuss her event and goals for SWAN DAY CT. The next step is to travel to another location and put on a Swan Day event to network with other female artists and spread the mission of Swan Day and Swan Day CT.
Before the event began, this image of managing SWAN DAY CT came to Hill after she had been seeking out grants on the women arts website (http://www.Women/ arts.org) and discovered an article referring to the holiday of SWAN Day. The story had read that the community of women arts wanted to establish a day dedicated to raising funds and visibility for women artists the world around.
Hill, an artist herself, was drawn to this concept and came to the conclusion that it would be a great way to support and expose artists and creative females, like herself. It would also be a wonderful event for all art/music/dance/theater lovers, male and female to network and see the true talent and the impact the arts/music communities of Ct are making .Now in it’s 5th year, Swan Day CT has grown to a much anticipated yearly event.
If you think this show is your run of the mill art show, prepare to be pleasantly surprised by the eclectic mix of talent this event has to offer. 12 bands will be rocking the house, all female fronted and from jazz to rock to pop to funk etc. All the bands were chosen from submissions of over 100 bands in the area and were chosen to be a representation of the great talent this area has to offer.
The event is truly more Lollapalooza than Lilith Fair and not a place reserved for just women. The bands, art, and dancers appeal to both sexes and you will find both genders having a blast checking out all the different things going on. Besides music, 20+ Artists, of the “art” kind, will be setting up mini galleries to show and sell their work. The Art category touches on all genres from photography to paint, film, mixed media etc.
Truly a fun night, for a good price, full of local goodies to keep you entertained all night! Get there early and stay there late...there's lots to see and fun to be had!
